It was the first day of spring and the big cleaning at the stables, plus the clover harvest had just come in. Grand Dame always insisted we scrub the leather saddles with a mint and lavender concoction her family dreamed up generations ago. The horses came back from their morning run glowing with sunshine, looking like equestrian statues chiseled from fresh oak. But the best part of the day was the groundskeeper treating us all to a sip of brandy from his flask as the thunderstorms rolled in.
